Under the leadership of the honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, several schemes catered to people belonging to the lower and middle income groups have been launched. One such scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, under which you can open a zero balance savings account. Moreover, this account comes with a lot of perks which include accidental and life insurance, loan and overdraft facilities, zero balance maintenance, RuPay debit card and so on. All this has contributed to the schemes immense success. If you’ve not yet opened your Jan Dhan Savings account, just follow the below mentioned steps.
The step-by-step process
Here are the steps you need to follow in order to open the Jan Dhan savings account
- Download the account opening form
The first thing you should do is download the Jan Dhan Yojana account opening form in PDF format. This form is available on the official government website of the scheme as well as on the website of authorized banks in which this account can be opened. The account opening form is available in English and Hindi and you can download and fill the form in either language of your preference.
- Fill the downloaded form
Once you have the physical form, you need to start filing it. You must provide your basic details such as your name, address, income and employment details. You also need to enter the name of the bank in which you would be opening the account, along with the IFSC code of the bank, branch name and the name and PIN codes of the city/town/village, the state, the district and the ward number of the bank. You can get these details from the bank directly. Other details you need to provide in the PMJDY account opening form include your existing bank account details including savings accounts opened by other members of your family and your Kisan credit card details, if you have one.
- Enter the nomination details
Just like with all bank accounts, you can also assign a nominee when you open a Jan Dhan Yojana account. You must enter the details of your chosen nominee including their name, age, date of birth and their relationship with you.
- Submit photocopies of necessary documents
You need to attach photocopies of the documents listed in the account opening form. These include your basic documents such as your ID and address proof documents and passport size photographs. There are also provisions in place to open the savings account under the PMJDY scheme if you don’t have the necessary documents, but you need to check with your bank for the same.
- Review and submit the form
The last step is to review your form thoroughly before you visit your bank to submit it. Ensure all the details provided in the account opening form are true, in order to receive the benefits available with the bank. Also, remember to check the box where you are asked whether or not you would like a RuPay Debit card with the account.
Final word: As is evident, it is rather easy to open the Jan Dhan bank account. The main objective of this scheme is to ensure all Indians, irrespective of which part of India they are located in, can avail banking services. The idea is also to promote digital banking among people located in the smaller towns of India. The facilities provided with this scheme are meant to make it attractive and encourage all Indians to open a savings account without worrying about maintaining high balances.
